Stout tussocks of extremely rigid and sharp dark green leaf segments, up to 1m across. Leaves composed of five to nine segments, each about 15 X 1cm; stipules spine-like, about 1.5cm. Flowering stems very stout and ridged, to 80cm tall with whorls of long spiny bracts. Subalpine grasslands. Nelson and Marlborough. A spectacularly horrid plant for the larger scree or rock garden. A. horrida is similar but rather larger and has long stipules.
