Botanical Description

with slender, creeping rhizomes which send up solitary, long-stalked trifoliate leaves from each node. The stalkless leaflets are broadly triangular or fan-shaped and wavy edged, 10-20cm long. White flowers are borne in spring in a dense spike on leafless stems 25-40cm tall. The flowers lack petals and sepals consisting of seven to fifteen stamens and a single carpel. The fruit is a small, curved capsule 3-4mm long, often red when ripe. Western coast of N. America from British Columbia to northern California. A. var. japonica (syn. A. japonica Maxim.) differs from the American plant in its smaller size, 15-20cm tall with leaflets 5-8cm long, their edges only three lobes. Japan, Hokkaido and Honshu.
