Botanical Description

Main stems to 15cm in length, the laterals either also prostrate or ascending forming neat mats. Leaves 8-20mm long, composed of five to nine elliptic to obovate, toothed, densely silvery, silky-hairy leaflets. Flower heads globose with red-purple stigmas and purplish stamens. Fruiting heads 4-9mm across with very short spines, on stems about 2cm long. Southernmost Chile and Argentina and Falkland Islands, in moist open habitats (screes to sphagnum bogs) from sea-level to 2000m.
